Curious Grizzly Cub
A close call! I was filming bears in British Columbia with @mpg66. They were easy to spot on the rivers edge as they hunted salmon, but we also needed to film them carrying the fish and feeding inside the dense forest. The best way to do this was to install remote triggered cameras. We found a pile of fresh fish scraps and a flattened area where a bear had been hunkering down. It was the perfect spot so I began attaching a camera to a tree. After a few minutes I heard a rustle behind me. I thought it was Mark until I turned around to see a large female bear and her cub less than 10 metres away. Her eyes locked on me. She was certainly surprised, and a surprised bear is a dangerous one. My heart sank. Instinct told me to run, but my training taught me that the best way to respond is to keep calm and talk to the bear. I said ‘Hey bear... sorry for trespassing on your forest’. Thankfully, she understood my British accent and headed back to the river. I switched the camera on and made haste. The sequence revealed how the nutrients from the fish scraps left by the bears contributes a huge amount to the growth of these huge trees, and the health of the forest. #EarthOnLocation #BBCEarth #Bears #GreatBear #Forest #Canada #BritishColumbia
