It looks like an alien cityscape, but it's a single 4 second exposure of a lightning storm over a petroleum refinery near Jo'burg, South Africa. Filming for #BBCEarth #EarthOnLocation in the #Sundarbans, #India... this was my last evening and as I watched the sun turn from egg yolk yellow to a deep crimson red, I knew that the sun would not set. It is a strange thing about the Sundarbans in that each evening the suns transit to the horizon is interupted as it dissapears behind a growing mist. During the night this mist envelops all the islands so that by morning you are greeted by a fog so thick that it can take several hours for the rising sun to show itself again. #Sunrise #Sunset #Fishing #Boat #Mangrove #Fog

In Yala National Park, Sri Lanka, the skies are dark. I came across a dried lake bed surrounded by dead trees. I knew the Milky Way was about to rise and so I positioned my camera to capture the silhouettes of the trees against the starry night sky. #BBC #EarthOnLocation #SriLanka #Night #Stars #Astrophotography #Trees

I was filming on the Indonesian island of Java... Early one morning we climbed a hill and waited as the warm glow from the rising sun framed the smouldering volcano of Merapi. Standing in its shade (to the lower right of this image) is Borobudur, the worlds largest buddhist temple. I was filming storms for #BBCEarth in Northern Australia... One evening, we managed to get ahead of a promising build-up. As the sun set the flashes became more intense, and the storm moved much faster than any of us had anticipated. We were standing high on a hill and suddenly it was all around us. The hairs on my arm stood on end from the static electricity. We grabbed the cameras and ran down the hill to the safety of the car.
