I was filming in Delaware Bay, USA, for #BBCEarth #EarthOnLocation... Since I was a child I have looked into the stoney eyes of trilobites and wondered how amazing it would be to go back 250 million years to witness the huge numbers that once scuttled and swam in the ancient seas. Horseshoe crabs are the closest I'll ever get, and in 2008 I travelled to Delaware Bay to film them for the BBC series 'Life'. Every year countless thousands are drawn here to spawn. On just a few nights they gather on the beach, their shells clanking in the surf. In the frenzy many males are left stranded, upside down and partially buried, as the females head back to sea. As I walked along the beach I flipped the exhausted males back over - a personal homage to the intricate fossils I have sitting in my cabinets at home. #HorseshoeCrabs #Delaware #Spectacle #Wildlife #Nature #Crabs
