Mount Kinabalu is the highest peak in Borneo. To many local people it’s known as the revered abode of the dead, believed to be where their ancestors spirits reside. I had spent almost two weeks on the mountain, climbing an hour each morning from camp in the hope of a clear sunrise. Each day the summit was shrouded in mist with only fleeting glimpses of the spectacular landscape. This particular morning was different, and as the sun rose I was able to take this image, revealing the stark and alien-like landscape that surrounds the summit, and glints of red morning light reflected in the granitic rock. #BBC #EarthOnLocation #Borneo #Mountain #Summit #Sunrise #Granite
Gunung Leuser National Park is a protected forest and prime habitat for the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan. This orangutan mother was rescued from the illegal pet trade and eventually released into the park to join many others who have also been rescued elsewhere on the island. The rescue process can be traumatic for these great apes, but her two week old baby girl, was born in the safety of the park. Hopefully she will never experience the fear and loss that her mother went through. #Orangutan #Sumatra #Wildlife #Conservation #Rescue #Baby #Primate #Travel #BBC #EarthOnLocation #WondersofTheMonsoon
I was filming a group of black macaques for #BBCEarth in Tangkoko, Sulawesi. This male broke away from the rest of the group and went to investigate an old fire pit. He dug around and pulled out a lump of charcoal which he started to chew. This behaviour has been documented in other species as a form of self medication to help neutralise plant toxins. To me this shot captures the inquisitive nature of these critically endangered monkeys. #Endangered #Monkey #Sulawesi #BBC #EarthOnLocation #Wildlife
