I had been camping in a remote valley on the Arctic island of Svalbard for several weeks. As the season warmed and the flowers started to bloom, I noticed a young Arctic fox becoming more and more inquisitive. One day as I sat eating my lunch he curiously approached me. I grabbed my camera, which had a 300mm lens attached but by now he was too close to frame up. As I slowly moved back I took this shot before he dived for my lunch and ran off with a cheese sandwich. #Svalbard #Arctic #Fox #Curious #Wildlife #Nature #BBC #EarthOnLocation #Tundra

The Cave of Giant Crystals, Naica, Mexico

We intrepidly stepped forwards – to say that the heat hit us like a wall, would be an understatement. My glasses steamed up and their metal frames started to burn my skin - I had to leave them at the entrance. A slightly fuzzy view did not perturb my sense of awe. I was dumbstruck. A torrent of sweat streamed from my head, my energy was being sucked away, and my breathing became heavy. The view was enthralling, my eyes led me forwards but my body wanted to retreat. I was dwarfed by a forest of giant gypsum crystals, some up to 12 metres long - the largest crystals ever discovered, some estimated to weigh as much as 55 tonnes. I was filming for #BBCEarth with @mpg66 in the Pantanal wetland, Brazil. We had been following a group of giant otters, when we looked up to see the transfixed eyes of a Jaguar staring out from the shade - directly at us. While exploring the forest in Danum Valley, Borneo, I was fortunate to spend a few hours with a family of red leaf monkeys as they played with and comforted their babies. They seemed to be as interested in me as I was in them. I was following a group of black macaques in Tangkoko, Sulawesi. This male broke away from the rest of the group and went to investigate an old fire pit. He dug around and pulled out a lump of charcoal which he started to chew. This behaviour has been documented as a in other species as a form of self medication to help neutralise plant toxins. To me this shot captures the inquisitive nature of these criticically endangered monkeys.

A dead tree springs to life when hundreds of budgies, looking like leaves, use it as a place to rest as they search for water. During the summer months in central Australia (November to February), the temperature can be in the 40s and water is scarce. I knew that budgies (Melopsittacus undulatus) would start to flock together as they sought out what little water remained . It was a challenge to locate where they might gather but I heard reports from an area south of the town of Alice Springs. I drove up and down the desert searching the horizon for flocks. I eventually found a small waterhole littered with little green feathers and fresh droppings. I returned just before dawn. It was silent but it wasn’t long before the sky above me was filled with the flutters of thousands of budgies, all desperate to drink.

Caught in the act! Whilst filming on Mount Kinabalu in Borneo, I sat down opened a piece a chocolate and took a minute to admire the view. That’s when a large shrew jumped up, grabbed my chocolate and ran off. It wasn’t long before he was back for more, and this was no ordinary shrew... It was the tree shrew that has a remarkable relationship with a giant carnivorous pitcher plant! We had discovered that here they were habituated, allowing us to to film this astonishing behaviour in detail for the first time. It was once believed that the pitchers sweet nectar attracted the shrews, and upon climbing onto the rim they would slip into the plants digestive juices. The truth is more bizarre - instead of being eaten the shrew uses the pitcher as a toilet and leaves a nitrogen rich deposit of poo as payment. Puncak Seringgit, The South Peak (3922 m), Mount Kinabalu, Borneo

Mount Kinabalu, in Borneo is home to the giant red leech. A remarkable predator, that can grow to be 70cms long. On these densely forested slopes they are elusive and had never been filmed before. After several weeks of searching, a torrential rainstorm drew out the leaches prey - giant blue iridescent worms. The red leeches were not far behind. We watched in amazement as a leach, almost as long as my arm, latched onto its prey, its quivering lips felt up and down the worms body until it found an end to suck. I was filming on the Indonesian island of Java... Early one morning we climbed a hill and waited as the warm glow from the rising sun framed the smouldering volcano of Merapi. Standing in its shade (to the lower right of this image) is Borobudur, the worlds largest buddhist temple.
