I first learned of the famous Salt Desert of Iran when I was a student 15 years ago, so when I realised that my flight flew directly over this spectacular landscape I booked a window seat and hoped for a clear day. I was not disappointed. I was flying home over Iran. Just north of the city of Semnan, I looked out of the plane window and saw the first signs of snow.
