Sand Pipers, Ruddy Turnstones & Red Knots

Filming for #BBCEarth #EarthOnLocation. I was in Delaware Bay, USA... In June thousands of shorebirds are attracted by the mass spawning of horseshore crabs. Their rich eggs are a vital source of food for red knots, dunlin and sandpipers on their annual migration to the breeding grounds further north. I laid low in the sand on a tiny island, as thousands of these fattening birds frantically hoovered up the crab eggs around me. As the tide rose the birds were forced closer and closer together until they were so tightly packed that I felt like I was part of the flock, and could do nothing but keep still and wait. #Delaware #Birds #Migration
